Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer | Dupe Alert | New at the Drugstore

This post contains affiliate and referral links.

I wasn't kidding when I said that good things are coming to a beauty department near you. That seems to be especially true for the drugstore lately. Turns out, Neutrogena wasn't about to be left out of the new product release action.

While perusing the aisles at ULTA, I stumbled on their new Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer ($12.99, 0.12 oz). I was immediately struck by how similar it was to a certain high end concealer stick. See if you  can guess which one just from looking at the picture below.

If you didn't scroll down to see the next picture and guessed Benefit Fake Up concealer ($24. 0.12 oz), then we're on the same wavelength. So you know I had to take it home with me and put it to the test.

But before we check out how the two compare. Let's read a little bit about what Neutrogena's Hydro Boost concealer claims (from Neutrogena's site):
Neutrogena® Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer applies flawlessly to help mask imperfections. The non-greasy, lightweight formula glides onto skin providing silky-smooth, natural-looking coverage. The unique hydrating core is designed to instantly quench skin.
  • With purified hyaluronic acid
  • Blends effortlessly to hide dark circles for a fresh look all day
  • Oil-free, non-comedogenic
  • Ophthalmologist tested: safe for sensitive eyes & contact lens wearers
  • Available in 5 blendable shades
Now that we know what we're supposed to expect, let's pit these two products against each other and see what we find. Is the Neutrogena Hydro Boost a dupe for Benefit's Fake Up? Let's find out!

Review: Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Makeup

Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear foundation

Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear foundation

By now you've probably come across the new Neutrogena nourishing long wear foundation. I was actually pretty excited to stumble on this because I've had good experiences with their foundations in the past. The idea of a long wearing foundation that's also supposed to help treat uneven skin tone sounded like a snake oil I'd be willing to try.

Here's what Neutrogena says has to say about it:

New Neutrogena® Nourishing Long Wear Makeup gives you smooth, even, long-lasting coverage as it works to actually improve skin's natural tone. The 12 hour long wear makeup instantly erases the look of skin imperfections as it provides natural-looking coverage. It has a Tone Correcting Complex—an exclusive blend of nourishing antioxidants, soy, Vitamins A, C, E, and light diffusing powders—and is clinically proven to provide skin tone and texture improvements in 4 short weeks. Beautiful day one, with even more beautiful results to follow. Available in 8 breathable shades.
Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Tone Correcting Foundation

With all this in mind, I practically skipped to the checkout counter to be separated from my money.  Since we're on that subject, I gotta tell you, I flinched when I finally saw the price. These were on a display that conveniently forgot to mention cost (well, played Walgreens, well played). Once I was at the cash wrap, I found out this product set me back $15.99 (plus tax that was a little more than $17). Almost $20 for a drugstore foundation? Was I being punked? My expectations just skyrocketed.

Tip: Do your wallet a favor and try finding this foundation at Target, Walmart, or ULTA where it's priced $2 cheaper. What's with the crazy drugstore markups?

Clearly, I think this foundation is over priced. I might be more forgiving, if it lived up to some of it claims (more on that in a minute).

Before we get into all the details, let me preface this by saying that writing this review was a challenge. I ran through a range of emotions with this foundation. I'd love it. I'd hate it. I'd kind of-sort of like it. Then I'd think I was crazy for not being able to make up my mind. It's just foundation after all. It either works for me or it doesn't. This foundation and I had a tumultuous relationship. It was like dating the most beautiful man alive, only to find out he falls short of meeting your needs. It hurt a little to call it quits.

Rather than drag you guys through all that drama, let's break this down into a simple list of pros and cons. That's how I was finally able to come to terms with my decision.

Pros:

  • Finish: The finish on this foundation is absolutely beautiful. Once I'd have this on and added concealer where needed, my goodness, it really looked pretty. It dries down to a satin finish that gives your skin just enough of a luminous quality without actually imparting shine. The perfect mix of matte and glow. Good job Neutrogena.
  • Feel: The consistency of the foundation feels great on your skin. It's a mousse-like liquid that seems thick when you look at it, but is actually light weight and never felt heavy on my skin. For the sake of comparison, it was similar to Stila's Stay All Day foundation.

Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Tone Correcting Foundation has a mousse-like consistency similar to Stila's Stay All Day foundation.
  • Oil control: It never felt oily on my combination skin. I didn't notice oiliness showing through as I wore it.
  • Tone: I didn't experience oxidizing. The shade I applied in the morning was the same shade in the afternoon.
  • Accessiblity: It's easily accessible, seeing as it's available wherever you can buy Neutrogena cosmetics.

Cons:

  • Wear: This foundation boasts a 12-hour wear and in my experience it fell short. By a lot. The first time I wore it, I tested it on its own merits. No primer. No setting spray. Only moisturizer, foundation, and setting powder. I took it out for a day of easy Sunday errands and family time. I wore it for about six hours before I got home to check the mirror. To my surprise, it was completely faded. You could barely tell I had any on. Cue disappointment. But I was willing to give it another shot.
The next time I wore it, I decided to include primer and setting spray into the routine. After all, this is how I regularly wear my foundation. Including primer and setting spray made a big improvement. However, this foundation still quits way before it's 12-hour shift. After six hours (not even half it's day if you're doing the math) it was already faded and I could see freckles showing through. Eight hours later, it hadn't gotten any better.
However, I was able to improve it's longevity if I wore it while at home all day. In the a/c. With very little exertion. My guess is that those looking for a long-wearing foundation are probably going to put it through harsher conditions. I find Revlon ColorStay foundation lasts longer.

  •  Coverage: I need to go on the record and say that the coverage isn't bad. It's not great either. I'm basing this on the expectation that a tone-correcting foundation is meant for those with uneven skin tone and some type of hyperpigmentation, which requires extra coverage. I found this foundation to be on the medium-sheer side. Yes, I was able to build it up.  But, the coverage I get with other foundations is better. I had to spend extra time concealing some of my trouble spots. And even had to conceal in areas where I don't need to with my L'Oreal True Match. Here's the deal, I don't have significant unevenness to contend with. I've been treating my hyperpigmentation, and it's significantly improved. I even feel comfortable not wearing makeup (something I was self conscious about before).  To feel like I still needed to reach for extra concealer wasn't something I expected. I realize that I'll still need to do some concealing and that foundation won't fix everything. Quite simply, I've had better coverage (and had to do less concealing) with other lines, including Neutrogena's other foundations.
  • Packaging: Remember how I said this foundation was a mousse? Can you guess what happens when you tilt the bottle over? I'll tell you. Foundation doesn't come out.  Slight problem if you actually want to use the product you purchased, no? The problem isn't necessarily the consistency, as much as it's the packaging. Stila's Stay All Day foundation comes with a spatula attachment for this very reason. Neutrogena does not. It really needs it. I used a makeup spatula to get product out (shown in video), otherwise I was liable to shake the bottle too hard and make a mess and waste foundation (and it's too pricey for that). The packaging needs improvement.
  • Shade selection: It comes in eight shades, which I don't think is enough. I purchased Nude, my regular shade in this brand, and found it a bit dark for me. The shades before it seemed a bit pink for me. Sure, I could buy two shades and mix them, but at this price point, I'm better off just going to the department store and finding one shade that fits me better. I'm wearing this foundation in the video below, and it seems to match. Perhaps it's the bright lights? In person, it was just the slightest bit too dark. I blended further down my neck to compensate. Maybe the longer the line is around, the more shades they'll release. Let's hope.
  • Price: I think we've already established I think the price is too high for a drugstore brand. Why are we in Physician's Formula pricing territory here?

Neutral

  • Application: Figuring out the best method of application was a learning experience. Using a damp Beauty Blender made it way too sheer (probably something you don't want if you're trying to mask uneven tone, acne scarring, or other forms of hyperpigmentation). Makeup sponges seemed to cause me these same problem. I finally found the best application method for me was to use a plain foundation brush. It helped provide the best coverage without over applying. I also liked how it applied when using my fingers, although it was easier to over apply this way, until I got the hang of it. This was a bit of a pain, but once I figured out what worked for me, it stopped being a nuisance.
  • Tone correction: I didn't notice any significant improvement in my tone. While I did test this foundation out during a four-week span, I didn't wear it every day, which is what I think is expected for any tone correcting benefits to take place. I'd say I wore it anywhere from 2-4 days per week, depending on what I was doing and where I was headed. That was enough for me to get a feel for it's other benefits and claims, but not to see any changes in my skin.

At this point (if you're still reading), you're probably wondering why I went back and forth on this so much. It was that beautiful finish and the light weight feel. I'd admire it in the mirror and suddenly second guess myself. How could I not like something that looked this nice? I'd get my answer at the end of the day.

I really wanted this to work out. It's why I gave it such a long try. But it boils down to this: No matter how beautiful it looks when you first apply it, a long wearing foundation needs to be there for the long haul. And that just didn't happen for me. I could've dealt with the coverage with a little extra concealer. But if I'm paying for long wear, I want long wear -- and that's what sealed the deal for me.

Have you tried the new Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear foundation? Was your experience similar to mine? Different? Did you find any work arounds for the issues I faced?  Comment below, let's chat.

Drugstore Beauty It List vol. 2

I'm back with another set of drugstore beauty items that I love. I know it's only the second installment of this little series, but I've already changed the name. I decided the "It List" was a better name for it. I'm hoping it'll stick. Do you guys like it?

So, what's this it list? Basically, I'll periodically share a list of some of my favorite items from the drugstore. They'll all be beauty related in some way and will include makeup, skin care, hair care, beauty tools, and sometimes random stuff you might not have thought to use as a beauty product. It'll also include items I've already reviewed (in case you missed it) and some I haven't.

Pretty simple, right?

Let's get into it.

Drugstore Beauty It List vol. 2

1. Maybelline Expert Wear Twin Brow Pencils ($2.99) / 2. Neutrogena waterproof eye makeup remover ($5.99) / 3. L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara ($5.99) / 4. St. Ives Fresh Hydration Lotion Spray ($5.99) / 6. Milani Eyeshadow Primer Nude ($6.99)

Maybelline Expert Wear Twin Brown Pencils: I love these little pencils. They're super affordable and they work great. They're not overly creamy, which I like because I feel like the creamy pencils deposit too much color and end up making me look like I have caterpillar brows. Not my favorite look. Also, how can you not love the price? $3 for two pencils? Um, yes.

Note: I use the blonde shade and my brows are relatively dark. I know gals with dark hair and dark brows that also favor the blonde shade in these. If you actually have blonde or light brows, this may not be the best option for you.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover: If you need to remove stubborn mascara and eyeshadow and prefer to do it without roughly rubbing your skin raw, try this. The dual phase formula looks like oil and water (you know, it doesn't mix) but it's oil free, you shake it to mix them together, pour it on a cotton round, and swipe away makeup. I like to hold it over my eye lid for a few seconds to help dissolve makeup, then wipe away. Easy. Depending on how much makeup you're wearing, you may need to swipe more or less. But you'll never have to tug on your skin.

Note: The generic store brand of this item usually works just as well. Go ahead and save an extra buck or two.

L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara: What can I say about this mascara that hasn't already been said, ad nauseum, all over the Internet? I'm being serious. If you haven't heard of it, I don't even know what to say to you. Ok, here's what you need to know: It's super black (get Carbon Black), volumizes  excellently, makes your lashes look longer. It's your little black dress for your lashes. There's the Cliff's Notes for ya.

St. Ives Fresh Hydration Lotion Spray: I love that these spray lotions make it easy to moisturize and pull up your skinny jeans without a struggle. You know what I'm talking about. Check out my review, so you can get more details. Just know, I approve.

Up & Up Makeup Wipes: OK, these are basically the generic version of Ponds makeup wipes. Those are good too, but I stopped buying the name brand because these Up & Up ones are pretty awesome. They're moist (ew) and they don't sting when you wipe makeup away from your eyes. I lean on these when I'm feeling lazy about makeup removal (read: It's really late and I'm probably intoxicated).

Milani Eyeshadow Primer: Wanna save some money on eyeshadow primer? Check this one out. Only $7 and works just as well as those popular name brand ones. Check out my review for more of my gushing.

That's it for this episode of drugstore beauty favorites. Any of these on your favorite list as well?

Video: Products I've Used Up

girly things by *e*, girlythingsbye, girlythingsby_e, product empties, video

I've been meaning to record this video for ages, as evidenced by the sheer number of items that I just let build up in my closet. Yes, I was basically hoarding trash in my closet. Not the stinky gross kind of trash, but empty bottles and containers of some of my favorite (and not so favorite) mostly beauty products.

At long last I've filmed and thankfully tossed the pile of products I was shamefully hiding. Some of the products in this video I've already reviewed, which means you can easily access more detailed information about them (other than whether or not I was a fan). I'll link those all for you below.

Items shown in the video (linked items will take you to my review of that product):
  • Generic versions of Cetaphil cleanser - original formula and sensitive skin formula
  • Yes to Grapefruit daily face scrub
  • DDF brightening cleanser
  • Thayer's alcohol-free rose petal witch hazel toner with aloe vera
  • Sephora Triple Action Cleansing Water
  • Nivea Sun-Kissed Radiant Skin gradual tanning daily moisturizer

Favorite Warm Weather Beauty Products

1. St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Lotion ($32) & Sun Labs Self Tanning Lotion ($37) | 2. Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream ($42) | 3. Nivea A Kiss of Recovery lip balm ($3) | 4. Australian Gold Spray-on Suncreen with Bronzer ($10) | 5. Neutrogena Clear Face sunscreen ($10) | 6. Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil ($27) | 7. Vaseline Spray & Go Moisturizer ($6)
Warm weather is here and it's time to change up some of your beauty routine. The stuff that worked wonders for you when it was a little cooler out likely can't stand up to the heat and humidity. Living in Florida, where it's hot and humid most of the year, I feel like I've gotten a lot of practice choosing products that are warm-weather friendly.

I bet you're all probably wearing a lot less clothing, which means exposing a lot more skin. And lot's of you are probably spending a lot more time in the sun hoping to develop a nice tan to accompany your short shorts. But let me tell you, there's not need to expose your skin to the harmful effects of the sun just to gain a little color. You can get a great tan from a bottle these days and my two favorite brands (St. Tropez and Sun Laboratories) can give you a deep, dark, natural-looking tan without the future skin damage.

While we're chatting about tans, let's discuss some great alternatives to help you protect your skin. Australian Gold makes sunscreen that has bronzer in it to help you fake a great glow while you hang out with your friends and family at the beach or by the pool. It'll give you great color, but it won't be quite as dark as Jergens, St. Tropez, or Sun Labs. On the plus side, you won't look quite so pale while you lounge on the sand and you won't go home with a blistering sunburn.

Don't forget to protect your lips, hair, and scalp while you're out frolicking in the sun. If you're not keen on wearing a hat, spritz on some of Aveda's sun care hair veil. It's light weight, smells beachy, and will keep you from burning your scalp while protecting your hair color from fading in the sun. For lips, I'm keen on Nivea's Kiss of Recovery balm because it protects with SPF 15, moisturizes amazingly and feels buttery on your lips. It may not have a fun food-like scent, but unlike it's sister Kiss of Protection, it doesn't taste like you're eating a bottle of sunblock.

You're skin care and makeup routines will need an overhaul too now that it's hot as can be outside. Who really wants to pack on lots of products only to have them melt off and clog pores? Consider swapping out your foundation, moisturizer, and facial sunscreen for one product: Smashbox's CC cream. It offers amazing coverage, looks like skin, moisturizes, protects, corrects uneven skin tone, and controls oil. I've worn this to the beach and it held up like a charm. Imagine how it will perform on an everyday basis. (Check out my full review here) And if you're not into wearing any kind of makeup to the beach, consider checking out Neutrogena's Clear Face liquid lotion sunscreen. It's oil free, keeps your skin matte all day, and comes in a variety of SPF levels. I'm personally partial to the SPF 30 and I like using this as my daily SPF too (if I'm not wearing my CC Cream).

Let's not neglect the rest of our body while we're overhauling our beauty products. Your skin still needs moisture, but who likes the feeling of lotion oozing from your pores when you start to sweat? You know the feeling: your moisturizer had already absorbed into your skin and then you start to sweat and suddenly you're extra slick. Vaseline's Spray & Go moisturizer helps solve this problem. It absorbs quickly while giving your skin the moisture it needs without the weight. Check out my full review here.

What are some of your favorite warm-weather products?

Product Review: Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunblock

If you are anything like me, you want to protect your skin. But, perhaps you're not a fan of adding yet another layer of product to your face because sunscreen can feel sticky and oily, make you look shiny, and cause breakouts -- at least when applied to the face.

Often times, the easiest solution to most of these discomforts is to simply buy a sunscreen specifically formulated for the face. They are oil free, which helps eliminate the greasy feeling and resulting breakouts. But they don't always feel light or reduce shine.

A few months ago, I came across the Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion sunscreen. I was excited at the prospect of a sunscreen that was oil free but also promised to:
  • Be  ultra-light and weightless on the skin
  • Not cause breakouts
  • Result in a matte finish  on your skin (it actually says this on the back of the bottle)
It also has great SPF coverage and offers broad spectrum protection. I purchased the SPF 55, but it comes in various strengths.
How could I turn away, especially for the price, $11.99 for 3 oz. Here's a closer shot of the bottle so you can seem most of the specs and claims.

After using Neutrogena Clear Face for several months, I have to say I'm pretty darn happy. I really like the light weight liquid consistency because I believe it does feel lighter on the skin. It feels like something between a serum and a lotion. In fact, it feels like a watery lotion. The oil-free, light-weight formula did not make my skin feel congested or suffocated, and also did not cause me any break outs.

As for its claim to leave skin matte, I'd say yes and no. I think at the higher SPF, there is still a bit of shine, although far less than I've experienced with other oil-free facial sunscreens. I wonder if I would have experienced differently at a lower SPF (lets say 30 instead of 55). For some reason, the higher the SPF on some products, the shinier I think the can look. I'm not sure why this happens, and if you do, please enlighten me.

However, once I got the amount of product down (it can be tricky to get used to the liquid consistency and accidentally over pour), I was happy to find my t-zone wasn't exacerbated by the product and definitely felt much less oily. Not perfectly matte, but certainly a noticeable difference that would make me forgo other facial sunscreens that don't have a mattifying claim. Another byproduct of figuring out the right amount of product to use -- it felt even lighter, likely because I was in fact wearing less.

Now, here's the deal. I realize it's sunscreen, and as such, you should be applying liberally. I'm not suggesting that you skimp. I'm simply suggesting that you apply a little less than you normally would. Until you get used to the new consistency, apply a little at a time until you build it up to a place where you feel comfortable that you've applied liberally without losing the ultra-light, mattifying effect.  It will eventually become second nature.

This is definitely something I would repurchase.

For the sake of comparison, the picture below shows the Neutrogena sunscreen on the top left next to a regular lotion sunscreen on the right. As you can see, the regular consistency is thicker.

For the sake of full disclosure, the sunscreen on the right, is Dermaolgica Oil Free Matte, which I purchased recently because I wanted to compare how a high-end sunscreen works (and because I've heard great reviews on it).

Have you tried the Neutrogena Clear Face sunscreen? What was your experience?

Review: Neutrogena Skin Clearing Foundation

I've recently gone back to my long-time foundation, Neutrogena Skin Clearing oil-free makeup ($11.99) after some weird, out-of-nowhere breakouts. I was quickly reminded why I once liked it so much. First of all, it matches my skin beautifully. Second, it fights shine. I can wear it all day without looking shiny. Plus, with salicylic acid it helps fight your blemishes as it covers them up.

Now, this is certainly not new to the market. I'd used it for years. But I've recently read or seen negative reviews about it and felt compelled to put a little bit of a different perspective out there. Here is what I've read or heard versus my personal experience:

  • It's not full coverage. Hmmm... Well, I would certainly not call it full coverage, but I wouldn't say it's sheer either. I like the coverage it provides, because I like to treat my blemish covering much like Lisa Eldridge recommends in her video, you only do full coverage on the areas where you need it, and keep your makeup sheer where you don't. This way, your makeup looks more natural, and you don't look like you are trying to hide something -- by default making it easier to hide what you won't want to show. I think this foundation helps you do that really well. You can apply it to your skin and sheer it out, and build it up where you need to.
  • It doesn't cover the red. I have had the opposite experience. One day, I looked in the mirror and just cringed at the red spots around my chin that just screamed out for attention. It made my whole face look damaged, when really, the blemishes were concentrated in a few key areas. I applied my foundation, and the redness was gone. I'd say that the majority of the time, this foundation masks red particularly well, it actually makes me wonder if there are any green undertones in it (green is used to counteract red as they are opposites on the color wheel). I don't think it does, but I like the redness coverage it provides. I've only had it not completely hide one blemish, a particularly stubborn and fiercely red cystic pimple by my nose. It covered a lot of the red, but it was still there, not as well hidden as the rest. I think if it covers more often than it doesn't, then I'm not really going to complain.
  • It's too yellow. Again, I don't think it's too yellow, and I'm what most people would call a winter. I look better in cool hues. I wonder if the people who have this experience possibly got the wrong color, something that can be easy to do with a drugstore foundation, since you can't really test it out before you buy. I can't say much more on this other than, I disagree. I think it matches my skin just fine. Plus, yellow is also a color that helps mask red and stubborn undereye circles, so, I can't see how having some yellow undertones would be a bad thing.
  • It's too matte. Well, that's an aspect of the foundation that I like. My once normal, now combo skin doesn't look overly shiny, and it's not so matte that you look cakey or dry. The ones complaining are upset that they don't get that dewey finish. My solution to this supposed problem is to simply apply highlighter to my cheekbones to give that dewey complexion. I prefer this method because my foundation helps keep my skin from getting oily, and I can strategically place my deweyness where I want it, which is to say, not everywhere. Another method I've used when I want deweyness is to mix just a smidgen of my Revlon Photo Ready (less than a full pump) with my Neutrogena since my Photo Ready is just too light for me to wear it alone.
So, I guess you can say I'm not really getting all the negativity out there for this product, but everyone is entitled to their opinions. I'm simply presenting mine and that's that I've had a positive experience. My skin is clearing up, thanks also to a good skin care routine (I'm loving Biore's Blemish Fighting Ice Cleanser, Triple Action Astringent, and Pore Unclogging Scrub) and my Pretika. What I'm saying is that this foundation alone isn't going to clear up your skin, but will help when combined with good skin cleansing habits. It certainly hasn't made things worse.

I do know one or two people who have tried it, and their skin did not react well to it. I wonder if they are sensitive to any ingredients, not sure - it was never really confirmed. I can understand why they wouldn't want to try it again. So if you have any sensitivity to salicylic acid, steer clear of this one.

Neutrogena's Skin Clearing make-up comes in 12 different shades and it available at drugstores, Target, Walmart and ULTA. I love that it's easily accessible and I'm glad they carry a shade that works well with my skin tone.

Is anyone else a fan of this product? Are you one of the people that doesn't like it? Tell me your experience. I'd love to hear how it's worked for others.
