The Makeup Show Orlando Haul

I promised you guys a video of all the goodies I brought home from The Makeup Show in Orlando. I haven't forgotten. It just took me this long to finally edit it. I'm so out of practice filming that I rambled incessantly throughout the whole damn thing. That means I made a video that was already going to be long, waaaaaay too long to endure. I actually toyed with not posting it at all because I kept getting tired of editing. You guys, I thought I was never going to be finished.  I'm a bit ashamed of all the stupid rambling I had to cut out of this thing.

On the plus side, I powered through and I got a little practice getting in front of the camera again. Hoping to get back in the saddle and film a few more videos to share. This time, I'll make sure to keep it shorter.

Enjoy!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. The Makeup Show Orlando Recap

Last weekend I got to spend some time at The Makeup Show Orlando. Remember how I told you about that a little while back? Well, if you didn't get a chance to go, let me tell you, you should definitely put the next show on your calendar A little birdie tells me the show returns to Orlando January 2016. That means, you have a little over a whole year to plan, save, and (most importantly) get ready to learn (a lot).

This is the third time I've attended the show and it never disappoints. My first time, I was all about the shopping. But in subsequent years, I made a bigger effort to network and learn. You see, that's the most amazing part of this show. It's not as gigantic as other well-known events (ahem, IMATS), but don't turn your nose up like a makeup-loving snob just yet. It may be more intimate, but it packs quite a bit of punch.

The Makeup Show stands out because it's cozier setting makes it much more likely that you'll be rubbing elbows and chit chatting with some of the industry's very best artists, not to mention the creators of some of your favorite brands. Last year I met David Klasfeld of OCC Cosmetics - talk about a geek-out moment. Shall I share that picture again? Yep, I'm gonna do it.

Me (blonde hair, dark roots and all) with David Klarsfeld at The Makeup Show Orlando 2013

The focus of The Makeup Show is education and every year James Vincent and his team round up some industry heavy hitters to teach and inspire others to hone their craft and work for what they're after. And inspire they do. Every year I walk out floating on cloud nine (and not just because I snagged a bunch of makeup at amazing show pricing). After sitting in on learning sessions with industry leaders, I leave with new goals in mind and a can-do attitude. Best of all, the seminars are included in the price of your tickets.

Stila makeup artist Kanesha Perry demonstrates how to achieve natural editorial makeup

My point is, yes, the shopping is good, but the opportunities to learn and mingle are even better. I sat in on an eyebrow lesson from Eugenia Weston herself, creator of Senna Cosmetics and Emmy Award winning makeup artist. After that, I feel like I could fix anyone's brows. Saunter my way with your over (or under) plucked brows. I can help you whip them back into shape. Eugenia showed me the way!

James Vincent introducing Eugenia Weston prior to her Art of Brows seminar
Anyone want to see a video on how I do my brows now? I was pretty psyched to learn that my technique wasn't totally off. Although a few of her pointers just bumped up my brow game.

I also sat in on a seminar with Renny Vasquez, the man responsible for making up gorgeous ladies like Brandy, Kelly Rowland, and Gabrielle Union. He showed us some of his makeup application techniques (strong yet seamless contour anyone?) and shared his story on how he made it into the industry. Want the inside scoop on some of his advice?

  • For a flawless contour: Blend until you nearly develop carpel tunnel.
  • Use a MAC 217 (or dupe) to apply a defined contour while simultaneously blending
  • Use a small fan brush to achieve a natural cut crease
  • If you want to make it in the business: Take advantage of opportunities when they come your way. (Did you know Renny was a shampoo assistant when he got his first big break?) And when those come your way, do good work and always be nice.

Here's just a little more of the TMS fun.

And of course, there's plenty of shopping to be done...

As expected, I partook in the makeup fun:

TMS Orlando 2014 haul. Some of the items pictured were provided as press samples at the blogger preview event.

Stay tuned for a haul video. It'll probably be long, but hey, look at all the stuff I brought home.

** Disclaimer: I received a press pass to attend this event. All opinions are my own and I only partook in show seminars included in the price of the ticket.

Beauty Haul: The Makeup Show Orlando Part 1

*This post includes press sample products*

So you guys know I recently attended The Makeup Show Orlando. I've posted pre-show announcements. I tweeted. I instagramed. I've even shared a few of the things I learned (don't worry there's more to come on that front). But I haven't shown you yet, and what I'm sure you're waiting to see is what I got while I was there.

Well, the wait it over. This post I'll show you some of the goodies I brought home from the show. But since I went a little crazy (I was at a makeup trade show on payday weekend, what did you expect?), I'm splitting this haul up into a few posts. Product reviews and swatches will follow in posts to come. For now, you get a a sneak peek of all the products I'll be testing and talking about.

Blogger Preview

As a blogger attending the show, the first thing I got to do was attend the blogger preview, where James Vincent, director of artistry for The Makeup Show, showed us some of his favorite items that would be available from the various vendors. He also gave us a goodie bag that included a few of those items in it for us to test out for ourselves.

Before I share those photos with you, I need so say this: James is a amazing. His personality is magnetic. His passion and enthusiasm for his work is infectious.  And his extensive knowledge is evident when he speaks. During the small amount of time I got to spend listening to him throughout the show, it was clear that he is an incredible educator -- the kind of person that truly captivates his audience when he speaks.

Clearly, I'm quite the fan girl.

Now, let's check out the great product recommendations James had for us.

The Makeup Show Recap: Beauty Tips for a Flawless Face from OCC's David Klasfeld

If you're a regular on this blog, then you know I recently attended The Makeup Show Orlando. Needless to say, I was excited. Not only would I be surrounded by beauty products for two whole days, but I'd also get to listen to industry experts share their insights on growing your career, building your kit, and applying makeup for different types of jobs.

Among those speakers was David Klasfeld, founder of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. I sat in on his live demonstration of editorial makeup application. During that discussion there was one vital takeaway: Editorial makeup isn't always avant garde and over-the-top.  In fact, most of the time, it's not.

He pointed out that when you look through magazines, most of the photos and ads you see include models wearing natural-looking makeup that makes their skin look flawless.

Go ahead, grab your latest fashion magazine and flip through the pages. I'll wait...

David Klasfeld, The Makeup Show Orlando, editorial makeup, makeup tips @Girly Things by *e*
David Klasfeld demonstrates his techniques for creating a flawless canvas for editorial makeup

His point, as I understood it: Many of the editorial jobs most makeup artists will work on will require an ability to apply makeup that has the appearance of natural, enviable skin. Your models won't always have it (Doesn't that help make them seem a little more human?). You need to know how to create a flawless complexion without ending up with cake face. (He said this more eloquently. I interject humor.)

Since he was talking flawless skin, I thought it was a good opportunity to jot down some notes. After all, you don't need to be gracing the pages of Glamour to covet a beautiful complexion. So here's what I learned:

David Klasfeld, The Makeup Show Orlando, @Girly Things by *e*
Klasfeld answers audience questions during his demonstration.

  • Want the dewey skin you see in magazines? Reach for a good tinted moisturizer. Look for a tinted moisturizer that offers coverage and is buildable. In other words, look for a medium coverage that won't look or feel heavy when you build it up. David recommends OCC's Tint ($29.50), which offers medium coverage and an airbrush finish. It also uses aloe to moisturize without leaving residue. A nice drugstore option is Garnier's BB creams ($11.99), which offers  good color pay off that's easy to build. (Note: I'm not comparing Garnier BB cream to OCC Tint just stating that Garnier has nice pigmentation)
  • Use more than one shade of foundation. Most people's faces aren't one single flat color tone. By using two different color foundations/tinted moisturizers you can create a more real-life effect. Typically, you'll use the lighter color in the center of your face, and the darker color (opt for a shade darker) along the perimeter to create natural shadows.
  • Your makeup application tools are everything. But remember expensive doesn't always equal good. When choosing a foundation and concealer brush , look for brushes that are firm enough to provide control, but have enough give that they can adjust to the contours of your face. For example, a firm tipped brush will allow you to get right up to the edge of the lash line, but needs enough give so you can gently pull and blend the color down.
  • Try to reduce the number of products used on your face. Too much product will make you look overly made up. When trying to look natural, multi-tasking products are your friend. Tinted moisturizers are an obvious gem. You can also use your concealer as eye shadow primer. If you're using cream shadow, make sure to set it so it won't crease.
  • Cream blush gives you a healthy natural glow and will keep you from having too much powder build up on your face. Choose a long-wearing option like OCC's creme colour concentrate ($20), which  uses aloe to keep your skin moisturized without any oily residue. Bonus: It's a multi-use product for face, lips, and eyes. I'm also a fan of water-based creme blushes, which have a similar moisturized-but-not-oily effect.
  • Only apply blush to the top part of the apples of your cheeks and lightly blend down. Why? When you smile you push your cheeks up. If you apply blush all over the apple of your cheek as you smile, that color will travel down when you stop smiling, creating a sagging effect that ages you.

David Klasfeld, The Makeup Show Orlando, Girly Things by *e*
Having a fan-girl moment meeting David Klasfeld

Those are his tips for editorial beauty you can easily use in your every day routine. Are you already using some of these tips? Which ones will you be adding to your beauty regimen?

Make Up For Ever Debuts New Brush Collection & Offers Fabulous Discounts at The Makeup Show Orlando

The Makeup Show

As The Makeup Show Orlando approaches (it's this weekend you guys!), I'm getting more and more excited about all the great products that'll be available to everyone at the event. From new products, to tried and true staples, it's unlikely you'll walk out empty handed. Budget wisely guys, if you're a beauty addict like myself, you can easily go overboard and spend your rent/mortgage/grocery money.

Speaking of being overwhelmed with makeup and beauty temptation, Make Up For Ever (MUFE), one of the main event sponsors (and traditionally one of the busiest booths) will be dazzling us with their full product assortment. If you're not impressed, that's 1,600 different items that include their professional-only items and special effects products. Last year, their booth was practically the size of my local Sephora store and the line was unbelievable. Do yourself a favor, peruse their site and make a list. You'll thank me later. Or if you see me there, you can thank me in person (*wink*).

If having their entire collection available at your fingertips weren't enough, you also get to enjoy a 40 percent discount on your purchase, a discount available to everyone who attends the show. That's not a typo.

But wait, there's more. (Try to contain yourselves) MUFE and show educators teamed up to create limited edition kits.  The kits feature each artist's 10 must-have MUFE products, a 10 pan eyeshadow palette filled with their top shade pics -- all available at 50 percent off retail prices. (Are you squee-ing yet?)

Then there's the new product debut. MUFE developed a new range of artisan brushes that's been in the works for five years. The 100 percent fiber brushes are available in 76 styles that have been carefully crafted to have the perfect balance of straight and wavy fibers so they mimic natural hair. Anyone who purchases 10 or more brushes will receive a 50 percent discount.

Make Up For Ever Artisan Brushes

If you're also looking for a little artistry education, MUFE is sponsoring Sharon Gault's keynote address Mama Knows Best - Making up with Sharon Gault. Lijha Sweart, MUFE media educator and pro, will also offer 45-minute complimentary seminars entitled New Flash Palette Focus; Artistry for Every Day and Artisan Brush Focus: Tools for Techniques.

After reading all my pre-show posts, is there anything you're dying to get your hands on at the show? I can't wait to have a little arsenal of new products to swatch, review, and share with you all.

New Product Releases at The Makeup Show Orlando

Last month, I told you a bit about The Makeup Show Orlando (read post here), which is happening  Sept. 28-29 at The Peabody Hotel. In that post, I shared information on featured speakers, event contests, and a few of the brands that will be in attendance. But let's face it, if you're reading this blog, you're probably most interested in products. Now that fall's here and the holiday season's around the corner (read: holiday collections), most of our favorite makeup brands are releasing some swoon-worthy new items. If you're like me, you've been reading reviews and ogling all the new product photos out there in the blogosphere.

Well, I'm here to tell you there will be quite a few new product releases going on at The Makeup Show Orlando this year that you don't want to miss (as if a room full of makeup brands and products weren't enough to get you all excited).

Here are just a few of my personal top picks for the new product releases that'll be available at the show:

Nars recently released their Eye Paint line for Fall 2013, a highly-pigmented gel formula that can be used as eyeshadow and eyeliner. It comes in 10 gorgeous, long-lasting (18-hour wear!) shades. The weightless gel formulation is meant to glide on smoothly and dry down quickly for all day wear.

OFRA cosmetics, which I originally discovered at last year's show, will launch their new semi-permanent waterproof eyebrow gel exclusively at The Makeup Show Orlando. I'm especially excited about this release as I love a beautifully shaped eyebrow. And I'm interested to test out OFRA's claim that the helps you give a precise shape that still looks natural. The semi-permanent waterproof eyebrow gel will be great for anyone, especially those looking for sweat proof brows (hello Florida heat and humidity!), brides who want smudge proof makeup, and professionals who often need to work with waterproof products.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics will feature it's new fall collection, which includes six new lip tars and six new nail lacquers. I love the lip tars and lacquers I've acquired thus far, and suspect I'll be just as happy with this new line. You can see my previous OCC posts here

Mehron will launch three new products at the show this year, but I'm most interested in the SKIN Prep PRO - a high-performance primer that acts as a moisture barrier between your skin and makeup to improve wearability even under the most strenuous conditions like heat, bright lights, and sweat.

They're also introducing their Glosstone PRO lipgloss line, which boasts ultra-shine and color without making your lips sticky. Sign me up for that! The glosses are enriched with aloe vera and vitamin E and come in six shades: 3 matte, 2 shiny, and a clear gloss (pictured below)

Now, these are the products I'm most interested for my own personal makeup needs. But there are more things available this year including:

Skincare! I don't remember seeing any skincare lines last year. But this year that's changed. Skincare giant Dermaologica is going to be in attendance, which is quite exciting. Check out some of their favorite items while you're there, including their Clear Start line, which  features products to help teenagers and young adults battle mild to moderate acne.

Mehron is also debuting their B.L.A.M.E. makeup pens, which are black light activated cream makeup pens that can be used on the face and hair (available in six vibrant colors).

You'll also have access to the exclusive brush set from Crown Brush, developed by makeup artist Ve Neill.

Pre-sale tickets to The Makeup Show Orlando are available online through Sept. 26. A one-day pass runs $35 and a two-day pass $50. Discounted prices are available for cosmetology students. For more information about the show, vendors, and tickets click here
