First Impression Review of New Drugstore Beauty Products | EcoTools | Physician's Formula | Jesse's Girl Cosmetics | Maybelline

This post contains PR samples and affiliate links
Doesn't it seem like there are new beauty products popping up every week? While it's totally exciting to oooohhh and aaaaahhhh over a shiny new product, figuring out which ones are worth the purchase isn't quite as pleasant.

Having to pick and choose totally puts a damper on those makeup baller dreams.

Alas, most of us need to be reasonable and avoid the FOMO purchase trap. Not nearly as fun. But probably much more satisfying in the long run. After all, you'll be happier with a few products you love than a room full of stuff you don't even use. Right?

Just think about how sad it would be to toss out a barely used product once it's reached its expiration date. Ouch! So many missed possibilities.

So let me help you out.

Today I'll be applying a full face of makeup using new drugstore beauty products and letting you know whether each of these items is worth purchasing.

Review: Jesse's Girl Highlight and Contour Palette

This post contains PR samples*
Who needs to eat healthy, when you can use makeup to chisel out cheekbones, camouflage a double chin, and strategically brighten and add luminosity to your skin?

Just kidding!

You totally still need to eat healthy because it's good for you. But as it relates to makeup, eating healthy is going to reflect in your skin, and the better condition your skin is in, the better your makeup will look.

But hey, we're not all perfect. Sometimes, we going to want to enhance or camouflage our features. If that's the case, you're probably going to need some highlighting and contouring products.

Listen, the contour craze is nothing new. It's been around for centuries. But when social media let the genie out of the bottle, the makeup technique went totally main stream. And now, none of us want to give up our chiseled cheekbones.

We've seen many contour kits hit the market. First they were all high end. But now you can find a variety of affordable contouring and highlight options at the drugstore. Among them is the Jesse's Girl Cosmetics Highlight and Contour palette, which retails for $12.99, is cruelty free and comes with eight pans of powder highlight and contouring shades.  You can buy Jesse's Girl Cosmetics products at your local Rite Aid or online from Amazon or directly from the Jesse's Girl website (all orders over $20 ship free -- and I highly recommend the Jesse's Girl waterproof liquid liner if you need items to add to your cart).

As you can see from the swatches above, these powders offer good color pay off, especially for the price! But are they easy to work with? Do they have nice texture? Will you even use all these colors? I answer all those questions in my video review below.

Review: Maybelline Master Precise Curvy Liquid Liner | First Impression

This post contains press samples, affiliate and referral links.*

If there's one thing that's obvious about my beauty look, it's that I love a winged liner.

My love of a cat eye has resulted in my testing out a lot of liquid liners to find my favorite ones.  And today I'm doing more of that.

Thanks to Influenster, I get to check out the Maybelline Master Precise Curvy liquid liner.  I got this along with The Colossal Big Shot mascara.

So this liquid liner's claim to fame is in it's uniquely shaped oval felt tip (pictured below). With it, you're supposed to be able to create thin or bold lines by just turning the direction you hold the liner. The flat edges will help you get close to the lash line and create thin precise lines. And you can wing out your liner using the tip.

But, is it easier to work with than my holy grail pen liquid liners (Kat von D Tattoo liner, Lorac Front of the Line Pro, or Jesse's Girl liquid eyeliner)? Will it really demystify the cat eye? And will it make me a believer in a felt tip liner once again?

Let's test this baby out and find out. Check out my experience in the video below.

How to Apply Airbrush Makeup featuring Luminess Air | Everyday Makeup Look + Discount Code!

This is a sponsored post*

For my wedding, I had my makeup professionally done and asked for airbrush makeup because it was Spring in Florida and we all needed our faces to stay on.

It was nice to have my makeup feel light as a feather while achieving excellent coverage that looked great in person and pictures.

But I never thought I'd one day be doing my own makeup using an airbrush system. It always struck me as something that required special training and additional time to be able to use it day to day.

Enter the Luminess Air Legend system -- a small at-home airbrush system that helps you achieve the same professional results at home.

Turns out, I was totally mistaken.

The Luminess Air Legend system is really easy to use, doesn't take up much time (or space) at all, and comes with everything you need to create your go-to, no-makeup makeup look that's appropriate for your daily life (e.g., school, work, etc.)

The system ($249 retail cost) comes with:
  • Luminess Air Legend compressor and stylus (available in 4 colors -- shown in aqua)
  • Primer (0.25 oz)
  • Two foundations (0.25 oz each)
  • Blush (0.25 oz)
  • Highlight (0.25 oz)
All products are fragrance free so they are safe for sensitive skin.

Get 25% off your entire purchase at luminessair.com with code: Girlythings25 (I do not receive any commission on sales made using this code).

Check out my every day look below. Now, what would you say if I told you I was able to get it all done in less than 20 minutes every day?  Pretty great, right?!

I'm totally going to show you how.

FYI -- the raw footage for the makeup application of my tutorial was only 10 minutes long. That means that once you get the hang of it, we're talking super fast morning routine.

By the way, you can achieve anywhere from sheer to maximum coverage with the Luminess Air Legend system, so adjust the amount of layers you use according to your needs.

Here's a closer look at my medium coverage makeup.

Now let's take a look at how I achieve it, so you can try it too! And don't forget to let me know if you want to learn more about this product.

Would you like a review? A tutorial on how to clean it (OMG so much easier than cleaning millions of makeup brushes by the way!)? Something else entirely?

State your case in the comments!

How to: Winged Liquid Liner | Drugstore Dupe for Kat von D Tattoo Liner

This post contains press samples, affiliate and referral links.*

Today we're obliging another viewer request, because we're awesome that way. Haha! Oh modesty!

No but seriously, a few of you have requested a tutorial on how I apply my liquid liner. And I'm all too happy to oblige because a fierce cat eye is pretty much my favorite makeup look.

Why? Because you can keep everything simple, but when you add that winged liner all of a sudden your makeup slays.

Best of all, it's appropriate for any occasion. Work, school, date, errands. You name it and the winged liner will slay it.

And it pairs well with just about any look. From simple to full glam, this adds a little extra sass to whatever you're wearing.

But mastering the winged liner definitely takes practice.

Today, I'm sharing how I do it and a few tips that I've learned to help make the process easier.

Plus, I have an awesome drugstore dupe to share with you. Long-time viewers/readers know all too well that I only have eyes for a brush tip liquid liner pen. For years, I've been using the Lorac Front of the Line Pro liquid liner and more recently Kat von D's Tattoo Liner (talk about a budge proof liner!).

But then, the dupe gods decided to smile down on me and my wallet and they introduced me to Jesse's Girl Cosmetics Liquid Liner ($6.99) and changed my life all over again. Just like the Kat von D and Lorac liners, this drugstore liquid liner has my must-have brush tip (think calligraphy pen) and easy-to-use pen shape. Best of all, it's jet black, fluid and inky, and BUDGE PROOF. I'm serious guys, this one didn't come off with plain old soap and water. It required waterproof makeup remover.

I mean, just look at how sharp that liner is.

Check out my tutorial (skip to the 2:15 mark if you only want to see the how-to) and listen to me rave about this dupe!

Review: Elf Cosmetics Studio Brushes | Dupes for It Cosmetics?

This post contains products I purchased myself, press samples, affiliate and referral links.*

Hi guys! Remember way back long long ago when I hauled some new elf brushes? No?

They were the ones I got because I thought they were dupes for some high-end favorites. Still not ringing a bell? Well here's where maybe the elf haul post will jog your memory.

Anyway, I finally got my butt in gear and reviewed these, just in time for elf to release their latest brush collection (the new brushes hadn't been released at the time I filmed this video).

Regardless, some of you wanted to know what I thought of these brushes and if they were indeed reliable $6 dupes. The answer is: Yes.

Check out my video to see which brushes are dupes for my favorite It Cosmetic brushes and which dupes left me kinda disappointed.

Review + Demo: Giorgio Armani Eye Tints and Eccentrico Mascara

The post contains press samples, affiliate and referral links.*
I was so excited when Influenster emailed me to let me know they would be sending over their latest VoxBox because it was a fancy one!

I was chosen to test out the Giorgio Armani Eye Tints and new Eccentrico mascara

You guys, I literally ran a victory lap around our condo when the box was delivered. My husband was thoroughly amused.

And before you write me off as a total label snob -- hold your judgment.

I actually LOVE the Armani Eyes to Kill mascara. So I was actually most excited about trying out another mascara by this brand. I had high hopes because my Eyes to Kill mascara is pretty darn fabulous and does my lashes all kinds of favors.

I was almost excited about the eye tints because the colors they sent me were right in my wheelhouse: neutral shades that I could wear to the office, on a date, or to the grocery store. You know, in case I'm discovered while shopping for avocados.

Giorgio Armani Beauty Eccentrico Mascara and Eye Tints in (left to right) Golden Ashes, Fur Smoke, Nude Smoke
However, if I'm being totally transparent, I was a bit nervous about the eye tints. I've always found liquid eyeshadows tricky to work with.

But if I (potentially) was going to be bested by another liquid eye shadow, it may as well be designer. So I dove in. And I was pretty pleasantly surprised. Check out the pretty and totally wearable look I put together.

Now that I knew I could use these new makeup goodies, it was time to dive in and tell you all about them.

Today we are going to review them and show you exactly how to use them and how they perform, so you can decide if they're worth the purchase.

Let's start by discussing their claims:

Eye Tints (available in 17 shades; retail price $39):

  • Boast innovative formula that transforms from liquid to powder and instantly adheres to eyelid
  • Provides 16 hours of smudge-proof, crease-proof wear
  • Blends seamlessly and disperses high-density color
Eccentrico mascara (available in two shades; retail price $32):
  • High-volume and long wearing
  • Precise lash separation
  • Buildable formula
  • Instant volume and definition with flake-free, clump-free results
Sounds promising right? Let's talk about how they measure up.

Review: Bdellium Tools 950 Oval Multipurpose Makeup Brush

Bdellium Tools 950 Oval Multipurpose Brush, @girlythingsby_e
This post contains press samples and affiliate links.*
If you haven't been avoiding social media altogether, then you've probably noticed that oval makeup brushes are having a moment.

And my moment, I mean: They're everywhere!

And since I'm not immune to curiosity, I have been wondering how effective they are. But, I'm also not keen on jumping on all the trends. And those fancy oval brushes will set you back a few dollars.

So, I waited. I was too nervous that I'd drop a pretty penny of a brush that I didn't like. And I have a serious aversion to buyer's remorse.

Like, I legit feel guilty when I buy something on a whim and it turns out not to be good. It's ridiculous, I know. But sometimes it keeps me from making impulsive choices (that are also expensive).

Anyway, you can imagine my sense of excitement and relief, when more affordable brands started releasing their own oval makeup brushes. But then something magical happened. Bdellium Tools released their own oval makeup brush

Why is that magical? Because I already know that they made quality professional makeup brushes and they make them at affordable prices. And then, as if to throw a unicorn into the mix, they sent me one to review.

*Cue the victory music*

So today we are sharing a review and demonstration of the new Bdellium Tools 950 Oval Multipurpose brush ($15). But first, a little info about the brush directly from Bdellium Tools' site:

The Studio 950 Oval Multipurpose brush is a professional grade quality brush that allows you to blend, contour, powder, and set foundation. The soft synthetic fibers and curved handle give you a precise, and flawless application with ease. It is great for all formulas.
Bdellium Tools products are cruelty free and all orders over $20 ship for free. Use code: GIRLYTHINGS for 10% off your purchase (I do not receive commission when you make a purchase using my discount code).

Top 5 Beauty Favorites | August 2016

This post contains products I purchased myself, press samples, and affiliate links.

I can't believe summer is pretty much over.

Don't get me wrong. It's not like I'm sad because the days of frolicking on the beach are coming to a close.

Let's get real. I'm in Florida.

Fall is just an extension of summer down here. So it's certainly not time to pack up the flip flops and bikinis. Heck, it might even be better than summer. Why? For starters fewer tourists, which means the beach is less crowded and fewer people are feeding the seagulls. The kids are back in school -- another contribution to the quiet beach ambiance. And, as long as hurricane season doesn't totally assault us, then it's still warm, but much less humid -- making outdoor activities (ahem, back to the beach) more tolerable.

Summer "light" does have its benefits.

No. I'm sad because I'm gonna miss that carefree summer feeling. Everyone at work will be coming back from their summer trips and the post-summer work frenzy begins. This time of year also makes me a yearn for some of the things the rest of you get to enjoy about fall. Particularly that crisp, comfortable fall air. It may not be bathing suit friendly, but boy is it refreshing (and makes for some amazing hair days!).

So, I'll be sitting around with my fall scented candles trying to recreate that awesome fall feeling -- even if I have to do it in sandals and tank tops.

But I digress.

We've officially put another month behind us as we speed through 2016. That can only mean it's time to round up my favorite beauty products from the past month. So let's discuss.

Revlon Oval One-Step Hair Driver + Volumizer | Does this work?!

Revlon Oval One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer Review | @girlythingsby_e
This post contains press samples, affiliate and referral links.*

Ever stumbled on a new hair tool that seemed like a genius idea but you just weren't sure if it would actually work?

Me too.

And I've gotta be honest with ya. My powers of skepticism are strong. Most of the time, my thought process goes a little something like this:

Me: Hmmm... well this looks interesting. Should I get it?
Me: Can this actually work on my thick hair?
Me: I'll probably end up looking like a French poodle with continental hair cut
Me: Or worse, with a gimmicky product hopelessly tangled in my hair
Me: OMG. What if the heat melts the plastic and this damn thing gets tangled in my hair?
Me: I do NOT need to look like frizzy poodle who got attacked by a hair styler.
Me: You're right, this is probably a gimmick. Stop being lazy and just do your hair the old fashioned way.
Me: *Backs away terrified and empty handed*

Clearly, I have issues that I need to deal with.

So when Revlon offered to let me test out their new Oval One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer ($59.99), I decided it was time to stop talking myself out of trying something new.

At best, it will work and I could tell you all about an awesome new tool. At worse, the above scene would unfold on camera and serve as a cautionary tale for all of us.

Hair grows back and burns heal, right?

Either way, you get to make a smart purchasing decision -- so my job is done.

Now, before we jump in to the demo and review, let's talk a little bit about the new Revlon Oval One-Step Hair Dyer.

Here's what the product claims (directly from Revlon's site):

The salon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer is designed to deliver gorgeous volume and brilliant shine in a single step. The unique oval brush design quickly creates frizz-free volume at the root and beautifully full-bodied curls at the ends in a single pass, for salon blowouts at home. Boosted by ionic technology, hair dries faster with less heat-related damage.
Ok, on to the important question: Does this thing work?! Watch me put it to the test.

Top Five Beauty Favorites | July 2016

This post includes products I purchased myself,  press samples, affiliate and referral links.*

I can't believe July is over and that fall is just around the corner. I'm not ready. I live in Florida and have been so busy at work I've basically squandered my summer and barely made it out to the beach this year. Unacceptable.

But what I've neglected in beach time, I've made up for in product testing. So today I'm bringing you my favorite beauty products from the month of July.

As you know we really like to narrow down the list to the most extra special items: My beauty top five.

So let's not waste any more time and get right into it. Check out the products I've been loving (and why) in my video below. But first, comment and tell me some of your recent favorites so I can go test out new products and spread the word!

Review + Demo: Marc Jacobs Glow Stick | #MarcGlowStick

#MarcGlowStick, @girlythingsby_e, Marc Jacobs Glow Stick Review
Press samples, affiliate and referral links used.*

Welcome back to another work week. Can't really believe the weekend is already over. It feels like it blew by.

Maybe it's because I decided to abandon my hermit ways and be a bit more social for a change.

I had dinner and drinks with my sister and her friends. That was followed by some much-needed time in the hair chair at my sister's salon. (By the way, you should check out my sister's Instagram if you want nail and hair inspiration. She's very talented.) And since I came home with awesome new hair, I couldn't let it go to waste. So the hubs and I went to the movies to see The Secret Life of Pets. We laughed so hard throughout that whole movie. Anyone else catch it yet? Did you like it too? I kind of want to see it again.

So that was my eventful weekend. I spent all of Sunday getting this video review and post ready for your guys. And since I'm guessing that's why you came here, let's talk about the Marc Jacobs Glow Stick ($42).

I was ridiculously excited that Influenster chose me to receive this highlighter for testing and review. I never would've thought to pick this up on my own. And now that I've tried it, I'm wondering what else I've been missing from the Marc Jacobs brand. Because this cream highlighter is pretty damn awesome. For starters, it's a universal shade that actually works for everyone (pale girls included!) because it has a clear base with loads of silver and gold microshimmer. No chunky glitter here. No undertone clashing base color. No standing in front of so many options you're paralyzed to make a decision.

It's not just easy to choose the right one (hey, there's only one anyway), but it's ridiculously easy to use. So you can get that angelic glow without any streaky stripey disasters happening on your face.
Check out my detailed review below and stick around to the end of the video to see the product in action.

Five Ways to Use Evian Mineral Facial Mist + Giveaway (closed)

*This post contains press samples*

I was so excited for the chance to work with Evian to share my favorite ways to use a mineral facial mist. You've probably seen these in the beauty aisles at the drugstore and even at your favorite beauty retailers. If you're anything like me, you probably thought they were only meant for those who suffer from dry skin. After all, you mist your face with water to hydrate, right?

Well, you're partially right.

But after actually trying a facial mist for myself, I discovered it's a multi-tasking powerhouse. I've been hooked ever since.

Let me share a little history with you:

My first time using evian's mineral facial mist was way back in 2006, on my first trip to Las Vegas. That's when I discovered just how badly a five hour plane ride affected my skin! I rushed to the drugstore on my way to my hotel looking for some relief. That's when I picked up my first travel-sized bottle ($7.50) and experienced a little instant relief for my parched skin.

I never looked back.

I didn't just alleviate my acute case of airplane skin, it helped me adjust to the dry desert air. This Florida girl had never experienced dry air before! I was completely out of my element.

After I got back home, I had to figure out how to integrate it into my regular routine. And over the years, I discovered all the awesome things that my little bottle of evian® spray could do for me.

Today, I'm sharing my five favorite ways to use evian® mineral facial spray ($18 for 10 oz).  Watch my video to see why this is one product you should definitely add to you beauty bag.

Review: Not Your Mother's Whip it Up Cream Styling Mousse

Oh why, hello there. It's me again. Sorry for the momentary absence. Everyone in my household (that means me too) has been super sick. And whatever germs we were carrying totally kicked our asses. We're talking bed ridden and house bound for nearly two weeks. It's been awful.  Even as I type this, I have the remnants of a cough and sniffles. You know, the ones that stick around long after you no longer feel like you're on the brink of death forcing you to remember the horror you just experience (as if you really needed that). So that's what I've been going through -- among other fun stressors. I hope you've been having a much better February so far.

But enough with the gloomy update. Because today I have a little fun to share with you. And to be quite honest, I needed a bit of fun in my life after that sickly experience.

I'm back with you to tell you about one of the products I got in my Influenster Spice Voxbox. And that product is the Not Your Mother's Whip it Up Cream Styling Mousse ($3 for 3oz, $6 for 7 oz). Now I haven't used styling moussed since the dark ages when I was in middle school and I avoid looking at pictures from those days because the crunchy, wet-look disaster gives me nightmares.

But guess what? Mousse has come a long way since those days. And the Not Your Mother's mousse is actually formulated to provide volume and hold without making it look like you dipped you hair in super glue. And bonus, it smells like vanilla cupcakes. Yum!

Check out my review below to find out all the details and whether I think it's worth the purchase.
