Review: Bdellium Tools 950 Oval Multipurpose Makeup Brush

If you haven't been avoiding social media altogether, then you've probably noticed that oval makeup brushes are having a moment.

And my moment, I mean: They're everywhere!

And since I'm not immune to curiosity, I have been wondering how effective they are. But, I'm also not keen on jumping on all the trends. And those fancy oval brushes will set you back a few dollars.

So, I waited. I was too nervous that I'd drop a pretty penny of a brush that I didn't like. And I have a serious aversion to buyer's remorse.

Like, I legit feel guilty when I buy something on a whim and it turns out not to be good. It's ridiculous, I know. But sometimes it keeps me from making impulsive choices (that are also expensive).

Anyway, you can imagine my sense of excitement and relief, when more affordable brands started releasing their own oval makeup brushes. But then something magical happened. Bdellium Tools released their own oval makeup brush

Why is that magical? Because I already know that they made quality professional makeup brushes and they make them at affordable prices. And then, as if to throw a unicorn into the mix, they sent me one to review.

*Cue the victory music*

e.l.f. cosmetics | Haul

I did some more shopping. Is anyone shocked?

e.l.f. cosmetics had a Veteran's Day sale and I indulged. Funny enough, only one (maybe two?) of the items I chose qualified for the sale. Ha! So my excuse to justify my shopping fell flat on its face. But, honestly, e.l.f. products are so damn affordable, do you really need to justify buying them?

No. No you do not.

So I went in.

I was primarily drawn in to the sale by all the new brushes e.l.f. released recently. Many of them remind of of the airbrush-effect brushes that a lot of high end brands have on the market (think It Cosmetics and other brushes like them). So, how could I possibly resist testing them out? After all, if they are comparable, I'd be saving in the long run.

Now come see what I'm talking about and tell me you don't agree.

Review: Bdellium Tools Makeup Brushes

The first time I tried out Bdellium Tools brushes was about two years ago when I saw them at The Makeup Show. I'd heard about them from watching YouTube videos and when I saw their booth at the show, I simply couldn't pass them up.

OK, I also couldn't pass them up because I have a minor (*cough* major *cough*) makeup brush addiction. But that's neither here nor there.

Regardless, I picked up a few of their brushes and liked them. So, I was incredibly excited when Bdellium sent me some brushes from their Maestro series and travel sized collection to test out and review.

Maestro series

The brushes from the Maestro series are made with both synthetic and natural bristles that are soft and have professional full-sized handles in a sleek black and silver design. The brushes feel comfortable and balanced in my hands. But part of what caught my attention the most is that the bristles are antibacterial.

Bdellium uses an antibacterial agent on the brush bristles to guard against harmful bacteria, fungus and mold to help make their brushes more hygienic. However, while it guards against bacterial growth, you still need to wash the brushes regularly to maintain them. You can read more about the antibacterial properties in Bdellium's FAQ section

Note: Bdellium is discontinuing the antibacterial agent in May, so if this is a selling point for you, make sure to nab some brushes now.

Angled shadow brush #766

For a brush lover, I have very few angled eyeshadow brushes in my collection. If I'm coming clean, Bdellium's 766 brush is only my second angled shadow brush. I know, I've been shamefully slacking on my angled shadow brush game.

For some reason, I just never reached for these types of brushes often. Clearly, I needed to change my misguided ways.

While testing the 766, I rediscovered just how useful the angled shadow brush can be. The shape makes it perfect for placing color along the outer corner of the eye and make that outer V look sharp. It's also perfect for contouring along the crease and other smaller areas of the face or even to sharpen the cheekbone contour. And the bristles are nice and soft so it blends effectively too.

Basically, this little sucker can mulititask

The quality of the brush rivals other well known (and pricier) brands. The brush hasn't shed at all. Not even when I washed it.

Tapered blending brush #785

If there's one type of makeup brush that I hoard, it's a blending brush. I'm drawn to them like a magnet. I don't need any more of them but it still takes all of my self restraint not to buy one when I see one. It's a problem people. And that problem magnifies ten fold when I'm face to face with a MAC-217-like brush. (By the way -- the Bdellium 776, which I own in the Studio version, fits that bill and is an excellent dupe in case you're wondering)

Anyway, Bdellium knows the way to this girl's heart because they sent me a blending brush and I was over the moon about it.

The 785 is fluffy and soft and blends effortlessly. If you're looking for a dupe for MAC's 224 or an alternative to Sigma's E40, check out Bdellium's 785 brush from the Maestro series.

I specify the Maestro version because I own the Studio 785 and while it works well and is good quality there is a telling difference. The bristles on the Studio version of this brush aren't quite as soft. In fact, they're a bit scratchy. So, the $2.50 price difference is well worth it in my book.

(Note: I own five other brushes from the Studio line and none of them are scratchy so don't let my experience with the 785 in the Studio line deter you from trying out the Studio brushes. It is possible that my experience is an anomaly because the according to Bdellium the Maestro and Studio line bristles are identical -- you can read this in their FAQ section. However, my Studio 785 is definitely not as soft as my Maestro 785. So perhaps it's a fluke?).

I didn't experience any shedding while using Maestro 785. However, it did shed a few hairs the first time I washed it. No biggie though. It hasn't happened again since.

Tapered contour brush #944

Now here's a brush I was particularly excited about because I really don't have one quite like it in my collection. The 944 is great for contouring. It should be, because that's specifically what it's made for. It's tapered shape and slimmer size (compared to a typical blush brush) mean it fits perfectly in the hollows of my cheeks to carve out my cheekbones and slenderize my face. The shape, size and bristles place color exactly where I need it and blend it out just right. (Read: No thick Snickers-like contour on this girl's face).

I've been using a fan brush for a long time to chisel my cheekbones and it worked excellently (Read: Perfect for avoiding thick contours reminiscent of a candy bar) so I never really gave much thought to getting a brush specifically made for contouring. That is, until Bdellium sent me this one. It's like having a face-sized version of the 785. It blends my contouring out even better than my fan brush (which is still quite a good option if you're wondering), making it seem even more natural. I didn't even know that was possible! And, just like my fan brush, this is also great for lightly sweeping highlighter on my cheekbones. Although, I must confess, I turn to it more for contouring than highlighting.

In summary: Zero shedding. Perfect cheekbones. The 944 takes home the prize.

Travel sized series

Bdellium's travel brushes are basically the same as the Studio line brushes, except that the handles are shorter. By the way, like the Maestro series, the bristles in the Studio and Travel line are also treated with antibacterial agents and the bristles are both synthetic and natural fibers.

I don't know about you, but I do love a nice travel set. It's great to have them set aside and at the ready (read: clean and organized) when I need to head off to some far off place (or more likely a weekend jaunt). It's always a good idea to have your favorite brushes in a mini size (or a back up in regular size) for just such occasions. You can grab and go without having to set aside time for a brush cleaning session before you pack. Plus, when you have them at the ready, you're less likely to forget to pack your absolute must-haves. One less thing on the to-do list is always a plus.

Let me just pause for a second to say this: I'm really diggin' the signature yellow handles. The sunshiney color just brightens my mood.

Anyway, let's talk about that brush they sent me.

Travel sized angled face brush

When Bdellium let me know they were sending me some brushes to review they also told me which ones they were sending. So, like a good little blogger, I immediately did some extra recon. I dutifully went online and studied the brushes I'd be testing. When I saw the Angled Face brush #990 online, I thought it would make a great contour brush. I mean contouring is suddenly all the rage in 2015 after all. So, if we're jumping all over the contour kits out there, we may as well also arm ourselves with some contour friendly tools, right? That's my logic anyway. You can justify things however it suits you.

When the 990 arrived in the mail, I was a bit shocked. This brush is large! The width of the bristles spans across the palm of my hand. And the bristles themselves are pretty dense, long, and soft. By comparison, many of the contour brushes I've seen out there with a similar shape have shorter, stiffer bristles, which made me wonder whether it would be as effective a contouring tool as I originally thought. So I started to experiment.

You see, it's much fluffier than your typical angled foundation brush and narrower than your typical angled blush brush. And upon first inspection, I thought the bristles might be too flimsy for effective contouring. But I would not be deterred. I would try everything I could think of anyway.

Luckily, Bdellium offers suggested uses for their brushes on their packaging, which came quite handy for me with regards to this brush. Here's what the packaging said:

"Perfectly suited for whisking powder of the face gently or brush off any excess."

After reading that, I thought, this is basically like a large fan brush. And that's how I proceeded.

What I found is that this brush works great as a powder brush. It doesn't pick up too much product, so it keeps me from over powdering, which is nice. And it's shape fits exceptionally along the contours and angles of my face.

It's also handy for contouring cheekbones. The soft bristles blend well and the angled shape fits well into the hollows of the cheek. Since it's not as wide as a angled blush brush, it also keeps you from making your contour too thick -- once again avoiding a chocolate bar sized streak on your face (are we noticing a pattern of avoidance here?). Because its bristles don't pick up loads of product, it allows you to build up color better and it's great for highlighting the top of the cheekbones without ending up looking like a shimmer bomb.

Oh by the way, no significant shedding when washing (maybe a hair or two?) and no shedding during use.

Other useful things to know:

  • Receive free standard shipping on purchases of $20 or more
  • All Bdellium Tools natural hair bristles are either pony or goat hair. They do not use exotic animal hair fibers and there is no animal cruelty involved in the production of any of their tools.
  • Vegan brush options are available.
  • Discount code (10% off): GIRLYTHINGS

All in all, I'm a fan of Bdellium Tools. Every brush I have of theirs in my collection is great quality and their prices are really fair. I have and will continue to spend my own money on their stuff, so clearly I'd recommend them.

Review: Julep Ink Gel Eyeliner & Angled Liner Brush

Julep Ink gel eyeliner, Julep angled liner brush, review, @girlythingsby_e

Those Julep Eye Sheen liquid eye shadows weren't the only products Julep wanted me to test out. They also sent over their Ink gel eyeliner and angled liner brush too. In case you didn't know, I have a soft spot for winged eyeliner. I love a good waterproof, ink black eyeliner product. I'm surprised I haven't talked about this more since I'm essentially always rocking a wing.

Well, now it's out there. And here's a confession, I love a good winged liner more than a smokey eye. I know. Shut the front door. But it's true. Even though I have lots of love for a smoked out eye (me-ow!), there's something about a winged liner that's just perfection to me. And it doesn't hurt that it helps give the eyes a little lift.

With all that in mind, can we just take a moment of excitement over here? I was practically bouncing off the walls when this little number arrived in my mailbox. I'm always down to try out a new gel or liquid liner.

Before we delve into how this testing session worked out for me, let's take a look at what Julep says about their product and what we should expect (taken directly from their site):
This creamy jet-black eyeliner is packed with encapsulated pigments that deliver intense lines with a silky-smooth, smudge-proof finish
A Julep-exclusive blend of age-defying ingredients, Power Cell Complex™ provides rapid hydration without leaving an oily residue on skin. Discover our complete line of Power Cell Complex™ products.

To use:
Create thick or thin lines with Angled Liner Brush. Cap tightly between uses.
Sound promising, right? Let's see how it stacks up.

Julep Ink gel eye liner, review, @girlythingsby_e

Packaging:

As I've come to expect with gel liners, this one is packaged in a little glass pot. It has 0.15 oz of product. The package seems pretty small, but the contents should last. The container is sturdy and the clear glass lets you see the product's color.

Nothing earth shattering here, folks. This packaging works well for this type of product, so it's no surprise Julep used it.

Performance and consistency:

Again, pretty standard (in a good way). The formula is creamy and smooth and feels smooth going on the lid. It's got a lot of pigment and delivers inky black lines. While it looks shiny when it goes on, it dries down to more of a matte finish. I'm happy to report the formula glides on pretty easily and the angled brush they provided allowed me to draw on thin and thick lines with ease.

Julep Ink gel eyeliner swatch, review, @girlythingsby_e

When swatched on the back of my hand, and allowed to dry, it stayed put, not matter how much I rubbed on it. Needless to say, this set my expectations high.

Sadly, that kind of smudge-proof performance (a must-have in my book when it comes to gel liner) didn't translate when I wore it on my eyes. I experienced product transfer from my lash line to my eye lid as I wore it throughout the day, even when I waited for it to dry. I'd check out my makeup in the mirror to find a faint grey line along my crease - not exactly what I was shooting for. I also experienced smudging along the outer corner of my eyes. And when I wore it along my lower waterline, it traveled to my lash line - giving me an unintended smoked out look.

It seems that as long as the gel liner doesn't come into contact with water, it stays in place. But once you introduce a bit of moisture, it smudges.I decided to test this theory. I swatched the liner on the back of my hand (again). Let it dry. And then tried smudging it with a dry finger (I wasn't gentle either). It stayed put. Then I dampened my finger and tried again. Smudge city. (Cue major sadness)

As you can imagine, this creates a problem. Eyes are naturally wet. When you add in sweat caused by heat and humidity and pollen-induced wateriness, it ups the anti. I need a gel liner that won't break down in the face of a bit of moisture (after all, I wasn't trying to wear it while standing in the shower). I can't say the smudging was terrible -- I didn't have crazy raccoon eyes. But it was noticeable, especially when trying for a clean look. Sad to report, this just didn't work out for me.

About the angled brush:

Like the shader brush I recently tried out, Julep's angled liner brush retails for $18. It's bristles are soft, but stiff enough to do the job. It washes well (no shedding or shape loss) and I love the sleek shiny black design. I love that the bristles aren't thick, because it makes it possible to be precise and draw on a thin line.

I think $18 is a bit pricey, especially since it's pretty easy to find angled brushes just about anywhere. But at least it's good quality. And if you're in the market for a mid- to higher- cost brush, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Plus, it's also cruelty free.

Overall thoughts:

I think Julep has a little tweaking left to do on this formula. The the color and consistency are there. It's super dark and glides on easily. However, when it comes in contact with moisture (as it will around the eyes), it's not smudge-proof. Considering this retails for $22, I consider smudging a problem -- especially since other gel liners out there stay put. If we can fix that one thing, it will make a world of difference.

Once they have the smudging issue resolved, I'd love to see a few more colors. Perhaps a brown and a navy blue for when you want a softer line (or even for when you just want some variety).

Review: Julep Eye Sheen Liquid Eye Shadow & Shader Brush

Julep Eye Sheen, Julep Shader Brush, Review, @girlythingsby_e

Julep contacted me recently and invited me to check out some of their new products. Of course, I said yes. I mean, hi, I'm a little makeup obsessed. Perhaps you've noticed.

I was a bit nervous about testing out liquid eye shadows. My past experience with such products haven't proved fruitful. I've traditionally found liquid shadows to require more attention (and seeing as I'm lazy, I don't like high maintenance products). My general issues have been that they shift and crease and can be a bit difficult to blend (either setting too fast or too slow).

But since these are not the same shadows I've tried in the past, and it's been a long ass time since I've experimented with the liquid shadow, I pulled up my grown-up pants and gave myself a little pep talk. "It's makeup, not brain surgery. Get it together, E"

There you have it everyone, proof that I also get a little intimidated by makeup. I have to remind myself it's OK to make mistakes.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I received these early in April, which is actually pretty perfect considering the weather down here is getting to be particularly unbearable. It's hot. It's humid. It's rainy. It's sticky. And it's only gonna get worse. (Jealous?) What better place to test a product's stay-all-day claims than up against the likes of the power combo (heat and humidity) that melts everything? If it can survive here, my friends, well, you see where I'm going...

So let's get down to business. Who's takin' bets?

Julep Eye Sheen Nude, Julep Eye Sheen Fig, Review, @girlythingsyby_e

Before we get into how these worked, let's take a gander at what Julep has to say about them and what they should do (pulled directly from their site):

This gorgeous liquid eyeshadow glides on easily and sets to a satin finish that stays put all day. The buildable, blendable formula is enriched with our proprietary Power Cell ComplexTM.
Shades:
Dusty Taupe Shimmer
Warm Fig Shimmer
Pale Nude Shimmer
Deep Bronze Shimmer
A Julep-exclusive blend of age-defying ingredients, Power Cell Complex™ provides rapid hydration without leaving an oily residue on skin. Discover our complete line of Power Cell Complex™ products.
Key Ingredients:
Rosehip seed oil – delivers essential fatty acids to the skin, locking in moisture
Malvaceae Lipid Extract™ - provides immediate and long-lasting hydration
Green coffee bean oil – invigorates skin and promotes cell turnover
To use:
Sweep a thin layer over eyelid with fingers or brush. Let dry. Add more layers to intensify.

Packaging:

As you can see from the photo above, Julep's Eye Sheens come packaged in a potted container, which is pretty standard for most cream shadows. I was a bit surprised that these didn't come in a squeeze container (or even something more air tight), given their liquid-esque consistency. It would certainly make it easier to keep air out (so they don't dry out) and control how much product you use.

I'm not dogging the packaging, though. It's sturdy and easy to store since it's small. The clear container gives you a good idea of the actual color and how much product you have left. You can also scoop out whatever product you need. I didn't experience any product dry out either. So far, they're in tip top shape.

Consistency:

A few sentences ago, I called this product liquid-esque (did you catch that?). It's because it's not entirely liquid and it's not solid. These are definitely  thinner in consistency than a creme shadow, but they're not so watery that they'd drip out of the container if you held it upside down (demonstrated in the video below).

It's similar in consistency to lotion or even those gel-type lotions out there.

It feels light and slightly cool when applied to the skin.

Performance:

Both colors I received were highly pigmented and dry down to a shiny satin finish. I only needed a tiny amount to get a nice wash of color. They blended out very easily using my fingers as well as the shader brush that Julep provided. I noticed that I was able to blend the color out better when I used my fingers, likely because the warmth of my hands helped keep the product from setting as quickly.

Julep Eye Sheen Nude, Julep Eye Sheen Fig, Swatches, Review, @girlythingsby_e
Julep Eye Sheen Fig & Nude applied without primer underneath.

When applying, you'll want to use light layers to build up the intensity and allow each layer to dry completely before packing on the next one. Otherwise the layers beneath will shift around and the color won't build up as nicely. Additionally, packing on too much makes this product start to feel heavy on the lids and that feeling remains until you wash the shadow off. When you take a little more time to build up slowly, you can stop before it starts to feel heavy (and still get color pay off).

When working with these, eye shadow primer is a must. Whenever I tried to wear them solo, I experienced a lot of creasing and fading. The higher the heat and humidity, the more noticeable the break down. When worn indoors in the air conditioning, these lasted all day long (with primer) and looked just as nice at the end of the day as they did when first applied.

Sadly, they didn't fare as well outdoors. When spending time outside (resulting in sweating -- nearly inevitable down here), they creased and faded. While they'd still be on my lids by the end of the day, they showed definite wear and simply did not look good anymore.

I'm curious to find out whether these fare better in cooler, dryer weather. Maybe they're just not meant for us Florida girls (at least, not outdoors).

Cost and availability:

Julep's Eye Sheen's retail for $18, contain 0.15 oz of product, are available in four neutral shades, and can be found on Julep's site. I wonder if these will someday hit stores? I haven't seen them at my local makeup shops. Have you?

About the shader brush:

Julep also sent over their shader brush ($18) for me to test out with their liquid shadows. They sure know the way to my heart. I do love a good makeup brush. I love the sleek glossy black handle and design. It fits comfortably in my hands and the bristles felt soft against my skin, but had enough give to help pack on color.

While it's called a shader brush, this can also double as a concealer brush and maybe even a lip brush (it's larger than a traditional lip brush but workable).

After several washes, the brush retained it's shape, didn't shed, and the bristles felt as good as new. The brush quality is very good.

If I had to nit pick at something, I'd say the price is a bit high. But I'm certainly nit picking here. It's about average cost for a mid- to higher-end brand. Like I said, splitting hairs. It really all depends on your personal budget and preference. For me, I'd like to see it cost less. Mostly because good shader brushes are pretty easy to come by in my opinion.

If someone asked me about cruelty-free mid-priced brushes, I'd certainly suggest they look into Julep.

Overall thoughts:

I loved how easy the Eye Sheen liquid shadows were to apply and blend, and that they offered great color pay off and a beautiful finish. For down here in Florida, these are just for indoor use. The heat and humidity seemed to be too potent for the budge-proof claim. I'd definitely wear these for days in the office and indoor dates with the hubs. But an outdoor beach wedding (lots of those down here!)? Not likely.

Bonus: Julep's products are cruelty free.

I'm genuinely curious to hear from anyone who had a different experience from mine. If you were able to get these to last all day in the heat, do you have any pointers?

Video: Influenster J'Adore VoxBox "Unboxing"

I was recently selected to receive the J'Adore Voxbox from Influenster. I was pretty surprised to get the email asking me to fill out the survey (to see if I qualified) because I haven't exactly been active on Influenster. By the way, by "haven't exactly been active" I actually mean, I signed up and linked my accounts. I haven't done anything else since, which is why I was surprised. I thought you had to write reviews and actively participate to bring up your score and get selected for things.

Oh well. Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I filled out my survey and was quickly notified I'd be receiving the J'Adore Voxbox, which would have some beauty items in it. (At least I got chosen for something that's in line with my blog and channel).

Watch the video below to see what I got.

By the way, Influenster members who receive Voxboxes are expected to participate in the various challenges the product brands are hosting, share photos or videos of their box contents on social media, and share their opinions on the products. Essentially, stuff I already do.

I'm excited to test out the beauty products sent and tell you all about them (like normal). But I'm also quite curious to see how this whole Voxbox situation works out and whether I'll get the chance to check out more cool blog-appropriate products in the future.

Have any of you gotten one of these Voxboxes before? Have you tried any of the products I received? Any favorites? Dish!

Review: It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe 6-piece Brush Set with Travel Case

I've been curious to give It Cosmetics a try for some time now after spending the better part of a year hearing and reading about people's great experiences with this brand. Almost everyone I follow who has used this brand has been thrilled with it.

Among the products I've heard people rave about are their brushes. But they're a bit pricey, which made it hard for me to take the plunge. I understand the value of a good brush, but I have so many makeup brushes, it was hard to justify the expense.

But this holiday season, It Cosmetics released a six-piece brush kit that I simply couldn't resist. For starters, the price was right ($39.50). But I was also in the market for a travel brush set. Let's be clear, I didn't need a travel set. I just always have a hard time narrowing down my selection to something reasonable when I'm on the go.  That's why I wanted a good set of brushes that I could have already packed up and ready to go at a moment's notice. This set fit the bill.

Since I'd been eyeing their brushes for a while, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. Boy am I glad I finally did. These brushes are fantastic (even more so because they didn't break the bank).

Here's what It Cosmetics says about this set:
The ultra-luxurious, ultra-plush collection of brushes work with all your favorite products but take them to a new level of airbrush application! The sophisticated travel case flips around, becoming a vanity stand for your brushes.
Each Heavenly Luxe Brush sets a new standard for quality and makes for the most effective distribution of your favorite cosmetics. The soft brush hair is perfect for all skin types.
• 100% Synthetic, Cruelty-Free Hair.
• PETA Friendly.
• Pro-hygienic.
• Soft for even the most delicate skin
• High brush count for airbrush finishing

Take a look at how nice they are. Talk about not skimping on aesthetics.

Don't worry, they're more than just pretty. But the name Heavenly Luxe fits them quite well. These brushes are soft. Legit soft. Bunny rabbit soft. But they're vegan, so no bunnies were harmed in the making. You can tell they're good quality when you hold them, as they feel well balanced and comfortable in your hands. Plus, they look super sleek.

Using this brush set and my hands, I was able to complete a full face of makeup with no problem. The brushes packed on color and blended out makeup effortlessly and feel fantastic to the touch. You pretty much have almost everything you need. I say almost because I can't be without my MAC 217 (and it's dupes). But other than that, I didn't feel like I was missing a thing.

I like to use the concealer brush as an eye shadow brush because its shape and stiffness makes it great for packing on color. This worked out well for me because I tend to prefer using my fingers or sponges to apply concealer. I'm also totally in love with the blending brush. It's so fluffy and soft. Plus, I have a minor infatuation with blending brushes. They're my favorite kind of makeup brush. And this one is no exception. The all over shadow brush is also fluffy, but a little flatter, so it makes it great for laying down color and blending it out.

I'm also thrilled that this set includes a spooly because this is usually the item I'll forget to pack and then I have to improvise (think procuring a super cheap toothbrush or even using my hair brush -- it's not cute). Interestingly, that angled brush is stiff enough to be great for brows and liner, but still feels amazingly gentle on your skin.

And let's not leave out the face brushes. The powder/blush brush is the perfect size. I don't like oversized powder brushes as I find it difficult to control product placement. I feel the size of this brush and it's fluffy bristles make it easy to apply blush and powder precisely and blend it out flawlessly. The foundation brush is also a nice blend of fluffy bristles that allow you to blend without streaks, but are also rigid enough to help you pack color wherever you may need added coverage.

By the way, these brushes didn't shed either. Not when I used them and not when I washed them. And, they retained their shape nicely after washing.

This set comes with a soft black, faux leather travel case that's not overly bulky and has a velcro closure. It Cosmetics says the case can be flipped around to create a vanity stand for the brushes, but I didn't find it stayed propped up well. Not a deal breaker. I'm happy to just lay it flat on the counter top when in use.

Oveall, I'm over the moon with this brush kit. These brushes are soft, effective, and a great introduction to It Cosmetics' brush line. If you're in need of a travel set or just want a nice set of brushes, definitely give these a shot. You won't regret it.

Do you have a set of brushes you reach for religiously for travel? Have you tried It Cosmetics brushes before?

Holiday Gift Guide 2013: Beauty Gifts $30 or less

Beauty Gifts $30 or less

Makeup and beauty tools:

It's quite possible to purchase quality makeup and brushes for affordable prices, especially during the holidays with all the great gift sets. Best of all, you don't always have to hit up a specialty store to find them. Case in point, the Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral Limited Edition matte and shimmer palette is available at Target and offers fantastic pigmentation and easy blending. Speaking of blending, you can also find a Real Techniques brush set while you're there.

If your giftee prefers high-end brand (how particular of him/her) don't fret. Stila has a great lip glaze set that includes nine glosses and a brush set both just under $30. There's also Anatasia Beverly Hills waterproof liner set and Benefit's cute LuveiIt Up kit, which includes three neutral shadows, a mini creaseless cream shadow, and Dandelion lip gloss. For the bold diva on your list, check out MAC's Viva Glam 1 holiday set that includes the original lipstick and gloss inspired by RuPaul. Bonus, every cent you pay for the set goes to HIV/AIDS research, so it's a do-good, look-good gift.

Hands and nails:

If you've got a nail obsessed giftee on your list, instead go for a little something different than  nail polish and try this Model Hands set by Julep. Help your nail fashionista take care of her hands and tips so all the fun colors and designs she wears will look even better on her soft smooth and nourished hands.

Hair

If you're gifting a gal (or guy) with luscious locks, consider helping her (or him) discover some awesome new hair products. Alterna's Caviar kit is a great anti-aging hair travel set that will help keep locks nourished, shiny, and full -- all signs of a youthful mane. And if Jennifer Aniston is his/her hair icon (and honestly, isn't she everyone's?) give them one of the various Living Proof hair care travel kits to address a variety of hair needs. My personal favorite is the  No Frizz Smoothing and Frizz Fighting line. Fantastic humidity fighting products that are light weight, smell great, and leave your hair looking ah-ma-zing.

Sale: Shu Uemura VIP Sale

If you're an avid beauty community member (either you love reading all things beauty or you also happen to write and vlog about it), then you are well aware of the huge cult following for certain Shu Uemura products. The Japanese brand is well known for making fantastic products. I've read so much about how wonderful their cleansing oils are and everyone and their mother seems to swear by their eyelash curlers.

The only problem is that they aren't exactly easy to find (unless you order online). Sephora used to carry the iconic eyelash curlers, but they stopped right when I'd decided to go ahead and splurge a little.

If you're like me, and have been curious to try some of their cult favorites (and maybe some of their less talked about items), now is the time to pull the trigger. Shu Uemura is having its VIP sale through 11/20/13 at 11:59 EST. During this sale you get 25% off your entire purchase. Just enter any of the following codes: SHUVIP, EBATES, or TEMPTALIA (special thanks to Temptalia for sharing, read her post late last night and woke up to place my order) at check out. Plus, if you spend $50 (after the discount) you get free shipping (an additional $4.95 savings) with the same code.

Extra savings opportunity:

For added savings, don't forget to access the sale through ebates, where you'll earn an extra 5% cash back. Hey, savings add up people!

Some shopping tips/heads up

If you are looking to purchase any of the cleansing oils, the site defaults to the largest bottle available (usually 450 mL). Many of them are also available in 150 ml and at a lower price. However, there are some that are only available in the larger size (e.g., the limited edition one).

The check out section also defaults to "no deluxe sample" and honestly, who doesn't want a nice freebie? Especially a larger sample. So don't forget to change that and get yourself an extra goodie.

I picked up an anti-oxidant cleansing oil (anti-dullness), eyelash curlers, and lash builder. Will you be shopping the sale? Comment below and tell me what you got.

Happy shopping (and saving)!
