Review: University Medical Acne Free

Hello! So I promised I'd give you feedback on how my little AcneFree experiment went. Well, let me just tell you, it was a disaster! My skin did not react well to this product at all. In fact, it did the opposite of what it was supposed to do. Instead of clearing up my breakout, it made it worse! Everyday, after using it, I would wake up with a new pimple in the same area where I was applying the product (you are only to apply the step 3 repair lotion on the affected area, not all over the face). Additionally, it was way too harsh on my skin. I don't have oily skin. So I certainly think University Medical would benefit from making this treatment available for different skin types. Just because you don't have oily skin, doesn't mean you never get pimples. The product was so harsh, my skin was dry and flaking and it actually hurt. That was after three days. Three. Days.

So let me just recap, in three days I ended up with more breakouts, and skin so dry it felt almost raw in some areas (like around my nose), and my moisturizer would barely alleviate it (and I drink a lot of water too!).

I didn't even buy the Severe Acne product that University Medical makes, I got the Clear Skin System. I took the product back to Target, and thankfully they let me return it.

Needless to say, I was not a satisfied customer. But, on the plus side, after just two days of returning to my regular skin care routine, the problem started to clear up and my skin was noticeably thankful.

So, a word to the wise, if you don't have severe acne, or oily skin, you might want to steer clear of this product, as it might be too harsh for you, as it was for me.

  1. Erika,
I actually use(d) this...I had to stop because I kept getting it on my towels and linens and it bleaches them! But, my skin did dry out terribly the first few days, and then it started working and cleared my acne completely. I also did it in the summer, this winter has been so cold and dry, that might have had something to do with it. Also I had to pair with my normal oil free moisturizer to help combat the dryness. Anyhow, just my two-cents! I've since gone back to my St. Ives medicated apricot scrub...love that stuff even if it is super cheap!

  2. Hi Chels,

I'm glad to hear that the product did work for someone. In three days it made my skin go nuts. I broke out even more (on top of the super dryness), so I just discontinued its use. It's taken this long, but my skin is finally getting back to normal from the breakout it induced. So, I guess it just wasn't for me. But there's another good warning in your sucess story - Do NOT use your good towels and cover your linens when using!

And by the way, I loooooove St. Ives Apricot Scrub!
